Neston is situated on the banks of the River Dee approximately 10 miles north of the city of Chester. It lies within the peninsular known at The Wirral. Neston takes its name from the Old English meaning ‘the settlement (tun) on the headland(nes).
A thin seam of poor grade coal runs under the River Dee from the North Wales coal field. The Stanley’s of Hooton Hall opened Wirral Colliery in 1750. An extremely dirty and wet pit it was finally closed in 1928.
